BEWICK SWAN
Slimbridge 14/02/2019
The smallest of the Swans seen normally in the UK. Around 7000 birds winter in Britain then return to their breeding grounds in Siberia to breed and spend the summer months. The majority of the birds stay around Cambridgeshire (eg Welney WWT), Gloucestershire/Severn Estuary (eg Slimbridge WWT) and Lancashire.
A few of these pictures show Ariadne, with a GPS tracker attached around her neck... you can follow her migration via the WWT/Slimbridge website
The species is similar to the Whooper Swan, but significantly smaller, and the two species simply do not mix, so will rarely, if ever, be seen in the same place.
