Arctic Tern on Inner Farne June 5th 2018

The Arctic Tern

Distinguished from the Common Tern by having a plain red bill, the Common Tern has a black tip to the bill.

Arriving on Inner Farne the first pathway is through the Arctic Tern nesting area, and birds are nesting within inches of the path, and in some cases actually on the path.

They can be aggressive and will protect their nest spaces and young aggressively. It is always necessary to wear a hat here because these birds will dive-bomb visitors who are getting too close incessantly.. I have seen blood spilled from these attacks!!

Despite that, they are beautiful elegant birds.
