Welney WWT - Whooper Swan : 18th January 2020

WHOOPER SWAN

Werlney WWT
18th January 2020

One of the main attractions of Welney in January, the Whooper Swans come over in huge numbers from Iceland to spend the winter here, often flocks of 5000 or more winter on the Ouse Washes. This year, due to the heavy rainfall the Washes were flooded and most of the swans had dispersed to the fields nearby to feed, so there were relatively few at the reserve.

January is a great time to visit Welney as the visiting Whooper Swans are there in winter, often as many as 500 on the Washes. This year was slightly different, due to the heavy rain the washes were flooded and most of the swans were away in the fields to feed, so there were'nt many to see on the reserve... however... there were enough to get some pictures!!
