The elusive and shy Water Rail, a regular visitor to the Explorer Zone bird hide. He appears from in the reeds, has a wander, a nibble and drink then disappears...

A speciality of the Explore Zone bird hide, the Marsh Tit, usually plenty to be seen there, though the occasional one also shows up at the car park hide.

The Calke Abbey car park hide is a haven for finches and tits as well as a range of other woodland birds, but also occasionally hosts one or two pair of Mandarin Duck. They nest in the tree stumps down towards the river and often pop in to the feeders to pick up the scraps on the floor.
